Speeding up your computer…. Part (1 of 4)

This month and over the next few we will look at ways in which you can squeeze extra speed out of your computer, both ways that you can do yourself at no extra cost and the most effective way that you can figure out where to spend your money.

Before we start this process, we need to understand what is inside the box that you call your computer – you see, the way in which you can speed up your computer has a lot to do with what’s inside, i.e. what processor you have, how much RAM etc.

So, how do you find the answers to these questions? Well thankfully, there is an easy tool that you can download to check your computer and tell you. Just head over to https://filehippo.com/download_speccy and download the free version of Speccy.

Once downloaded, double click the installation file and follow the screens to install it.

Select the option to not install CCleaner and click install. The installation will start and when it’s finished you will see a screen confirming the setup has been completed, just remove the tick from the “view release notes” box and click “run Speccy” to start the program.

Now you will see a screen that has a number of options on the left (summary, operating system, CPU etc.) and details on the right (depending on which option you have selected). Have a click around – you can’t break anything. Next month we will look at exactly how you can figure out what to look at. We will specifically be looking at RAM and Storage, but operating system and CPU are well worth a look at as well.
