Something for the weekend sir?…

I’ve been writing to you on these pages for a little over 7 years now – yes, I know and you’re still here reading them! Either I’m doing something interesting or you guys need to get out a lot more! Talking about “getting out”, this is not always easy in this new socially distanced world that we find ourselves in at the moment, is it? I am not sure what the answer is, but I hope it happens sooner rather than later.

So, if you are stuck spending more time inside then hopefully we can find some things for you to do to keep your minds active. How about taking a course with the Open University? They have tonnes of courses in practically every subject you can think of, from history and the arts, languages, nature, and the environment through to science, maths, technology and politics and law. During lockdown I completed a course called “Astronomy with an online telescope” where, as part of the course, I took photographs of stars using the robotic telescopes in their observatory in Tenerife.

If you’d like to have a look at their list of courses, then pop along here…

If that doesn’t interest you, then how about doing something practical to help organisations? Wildwatch Kenya want your help to count, identify and track the giraffes and other wildlife living in their conservation sites. They have 100 motion activated cameras which automatically take pictures of animals as they pass by, they need your help to study the photos and feedback which animals you see so that they can build a picture of which areas the creatures are using. If you would like to give this a go then you can find them here…

Perhaps you’re more into museums or art? There are a wide range of virtual tours available online, from the Guggenheim Museum in New York to the British Museum in London, you can take a tour of a large number of great world renowned museums without leaving the comfort of your computer chair, if this floats your boat then have a look here…
