More Smart Devices to Protect Your Home…

We’ve covered a few devices over the years here that are both smart and help automate or protect your home in some way; things like the Amazon Alexa voice operated assistant that you can use to turn lights on and off, ask questions, play music, tell you translated words, make timers and remind you of things amongst many other gadgets. We’ve also looked at home security cameras that will send messages to your mobile or tablet when they “see” movement. If you missed them you can read more here…

Amazon Echo Dot – amazing voice recognition device

This month we are going to delve into another smart device and one that could save lives, smart smoke alarms.

I’ve been looking for some time for a set of smoke alarms – there are loads out there as I’m sure you know, but very few of them are “smart” and those that are, are VERY expensive. I have been looking for a smoke alarm that works both in the conventional way (i.e. it will make a loud noise in the dead of night if it detects smoke) but also one that will alert me if I happen to be away from the house and smoke is detected – THIS is the bit that most smoke detectors do not seem to do and the ones that do are well over 100 euros (which is far too much for me to afford!)

Well my searching paid off, I’ve managed to find one and it works perfectly.

This little device works in exactly the same way as a conventional smoke alarm but it also links to your wifi network and sends an alert to your smart phone or tablet through the TuyaSmart App when it detects smoke. It also distinguishes between someone pressing the “test” button on the smoke alarm to check its battery and a real smoke detection and informs your mobile that it was just a “test” – great, easy to setup and works a treat and all for just 30 euros + IVA!
