Improving your wifi signal…

It’s a common issue isn’t it, we have more and more things that we want to connect to our Wi-Fi router as our Internet speed grows quicker and quicker with fibre this and fast Internet that. We want to move around our home and garden carrying our phones and tablets and expect our What’s App call to the UK to remain connected wherever we are in the home BUT most of us experience poor connection spots somewhere around the house. Maybe some of you have a wireless extender or wireless access point in the outer reaches of your routers Wi-Fi area but even this solution means that when you move from one Wi-Fi area to another the connection has to drop and switch and the reality is that most devices “hold on” to the weak signal in preference to moving to the stronger “new” Wi-Fi area – so what can we do? Is there a solution?

YES! Mesh Wi-Fi is the answer. This system of Wi-Fi has been around for some time but has historically been quite expensive and predominantly used by business to cover large areas (schools, hospitals etc.) but recently the price has come down to make it affordable to you and I and the quality and ease of use, as with all of these things, has improved!

Mesh Wi-Fi offers something new, a single, unbroken Wi-Fi connection around your home. What happens is that you connect your first mesh Wi-Fi point to your existing Internet router and create your new Wi-Fi network, you then place other mesh Wi-Fi points around your home at points relevant to the strength of connection to the first mesh point. You can buy additional points when you need them, but 3 points is almost always sufficient to cover even the biggest of homes. Most of the systems have both 2.4GHz and the faster 5GHz Wi-Fi antennas, giving you access to the best connection for your device, some of them are even designed to look more like smoke detectors rather than wireless access points, enabling you to “hide” them around your home innocuously. In terms of cost, you can pick up an entry level system from 100 – 150 euros.

The mesh points “talk” to each other and move your connection when the signal strength is best for your device, so as you walk around your home with your Wi-Fi connected mobile phone your mesh system will decide when the best time is to pass your Wi-Fi connection to the next point and will do so, seamlessly, ensuring that you have a strong, constant and fast connection all the way back to your Internet router.

So, if Wi-Fi connection is important to you then perhaps this is something to put on the Christmas list!
