If you have a business here on the Costa’s then you should already know about the power of Facebook, especially if you market to the ex-pat market here as most brits here on the Costa Blanca are very familiar with Facebook, they use it for everything from finding local businesses, rating the service that they have received to catching up with friends and family here and back “home” in the UK.
I would go as far as to say that retired people here in Spain are much more “teched up” and familiar with how technology and Facebook work than their peers back home; of course this ability, I think, comes from the need to use technology to keep in touch that wouldn’t be necessary back in the UK. Whatever the reason, if you’re a business owner then you should know that your core customers use social media.
So, what can you do to make this work for your business?
The answer is utilise Facebook WiFi – yep you heard right! Technically these boxes are not “routers”, they are wireless access points that allow you to offer your customers free Internet access whilst they are at your premises. The great thing about these little black boxes, is that they exchange Internet access with Facebook “check-ins” to your page. So, when a customer wants to use your Internet connection to check their email or browse the Internet, they are able to do so only once they have “checked in” to your Facebook page, giving you greater exposure throughout facebook therefore making it much easier for people to find your business. I’ve installed a number of these wifi access points into bars and restarants in the area and they really do help highlight the businesses locally in Facebook. You see, when someone checks in to your business that information is published to their friends, so by using your free wifi and checking into your business facebook page, they are essentially announcing to their friends “hey look where I’m eating tonight”, which should encourage more people to want to do the same and more people is exactly what you want, right?
