Computer New Year’s Resolutions…

Computer New Year’s Resolutions…

Well it’s that time of year again! Christmas is over (well the one on the 25th December is anyway) I hope you all had a great time, received the presents you were hoping for and didn’t drink too much – well 2 out of 3 ain’t bad!

As we start to make those unrealistic resolutions that we never have any intention of keeping, I thought I would throw in a few more achievable resolutions that you should consider for the health of your computer.

1. I will back up my important stuff regularly.

This is a favorite gripe of mine.  This is mainly because I see so many unfortunate people that contact me with computers that have failed catastrophically and their data is unrecoverable because they don’t have a backup.  Just imagine all of your precious pictures, documents and music gone!

If you want to find out more information on backups then the link below should give you everything you need…

2. I won’t believe everything that I am sent by email.

We receive so many emails nowadays about all sorts of things and it’s easy to take them at face value – especially if they are sent to us from friends or family.  You should try keeping an open mind about everything that you receive by email and don’t just accept them as truth.  Over the years I have seen emails that warn about everything from the “next big virus”, to racist lies and even one that told me the world was going to end in December – something to do with the Mayan calendar running out (well, they’re not around themselves any more so I guess there is no-one available to update it!)

It’s easy to just accept some of these emails as truth, especially if they come from people that we regard as knowing more about these subjects than we do, however you should be skeptical and research them yourself, it’s usually very easy.

If you want to find out how easy then just pop along to the link below (it’s safe, honest!) and find out for yourself…

3. I will keep my operating system up to date

It’s difficult sometimes to know when and what you should update on your computer.  Some of the most common questions that I am asked are, “should I update Java?” and “how do I know if it’s safe to update?” etc.

Generally speaking it’s good to update anything that reports that it’s from AVG (or your particular AntiVirus system), Adobe, Java or Microsoft (i.e. Windows Update).  By keeping your system up to date (especially with the Microsoft updates) you ensure that you are protected from the latest vulnerabilities out there on the big bad Internet.  If you want to find out more about how to make sure you are properly up to date then the link below will help…

4. I won’t install everything I see and then wonder why my computer is running slowly

There is a world of stuff out there that we can download and install for free onto your computer and there are all sorts of things that get installed automatically with a great deal of this software.  If you don’t need it then don’t install it.  If you download and install something and then realise it’s not useful then remove it afterwards.  Most of this type of thing ends up clogging up our computers, making them slow and unresponsive so try to avoid it if you can.
