Upgrading your AVG software…

Sounds obvious really doesn’t it, but I have recently visited a number of customers who didn’t realise that this process wasn’t automatic, so I thought I would write about it this month and just highlight the pitfalls and what you should do / expect when paying for the AVG anti-virus product.

Last time we looked at a new virus making the rounds called Crypto Locker, this virus is ‘ransomware’ and not only locks you out of your computer, demanding money to give you access again but also encrypts all of your important data so even asking/paying a computer tech to clear the virus won’t give you your data back! Ok, I know that we are all cautious when it comes to viruses and we always try to ensure that we have our anti-virus programs up to date. However, in reality the worst case scenario is that if you are unlucky enough to become infected all you will need to do is pay someone like me some folding stuff to come and sort it out for you. Its update time again – AVG this time!

Last month, on the 4th September, AVG released their latest instalment of their free anti-virus program; this one is called AVG Free 2014 (how do they come up with these version numbers?!!).

Anyway the new version is very similar in look and feel to the old version (AVG free 2013) so you shouldn’t have any difficulty using it. Read this entire article »

The FBI could turn off your Internet on the 9th July!

9th July – put this date in your diary – the FBI could stop your computer from working!

It sounds like something out of a Holywood film or the title of one of those “dodgy” emails doesn’t it – well this time it’s true and I’ll explain why.

There is a virus that has been flying around the Internet for the past four years that has been silently hijacking people’s computers – some 4 million computers to date. The virus is called DNSChanger and it has managed to alter the DNS (Domain Name Server) on the computers it has infected. Read this entire article »
