Google Drive is being replaced…

If you use Google Drive or Google Photos on the PC or Mac then this effects you, Google will start to remove these products in December 2017 with a view to closing them completley by March 2018.

Don’t stress if you do use one of these products, however as Google will be replacing them with “Backup and Sync for Google Photos and Google Drive”. The good thing about this new piece of software is that it will enable you to “backup and sync” photos not only from your PC or Mac but from USB devices and SD cards – all to the cloud.

You can find more information and get hold of this new software by visiting the link…

…from there you can see that there are two options, home (Google Backup and Sync) and business (Drive File Stream). The main difference between the two is that the businesss option isn’t free – it offers more than the 15Gb of space that the free version does (there are 100Gb, 1Tb and 100Tb options) and doesn’t require that you use space on your computer to store the files that are synced – yes the business option is true cloud storage, whereas the home, free option is only a syncronisation service.

One of the great features of both versions is its search facility. For each of the photos or documents uploaded, Google can recognise text and images in the files and builds a search index around your files. You can collaborate and share documents and files with other people and if you have a smart phone or tablet with a camera you can link it direct to your Google account and automatically store your photos in your Google Drive and of course because you are syncronising all of your PC or Mac photos with your drive, when you access Google Drive from your phone or tablet, you can see your entire photo library.
