I found out something interesting this week. I had always been under the impression that Microsoft were by far the biggest “computer” company in the world. I mean their software is used on the vast majority of the PC’s, laptops and servers throughout every country, their percentage share of operating systems when compared to Apple for example is reported by Wikipedia to be as much as 90% in Microsoft’s favour – not bad in anyone’s book! Last month we looked at the various web browsers you can use to view Internet pages and we found that there were four main alternatives. We also looked at the fact that it’s important to ensure that your computer has the latest updates installed and how you go about doing that. If you missed last month’s article you can find a copy of it on our website at www.bluemoonsolutions.es/articles This month we continue our look at web browsers and focus on Microsoft’s latest version – Internet Explorer 9. Over the past few months Microsoft have been offering all of its Windows users (you guys) an optional upgrade as part of the Windows Updates programme. Most of you will have seen a message offering to upgrade your computer to include Internet Explorer 9 at some point over the past few months.
So this month and next I thought we would talk about what web browsers are, why there are so many and what is new in Internet Explorer 9 and whether you should bother downloading it. Read this entire article »
I am regularly asked about how to take backups, I guess it’s something that we all know we should do but it’s one of those things that we never really get around to doing. The long and the short of it is if you don’t have your important data in two or more places then you don’t really have it at all. I’m not scared mongering here, it’s not unusual for computer hard drives to simply fail, for them to become corrupted or infected by a virus or for a computer to be stolen. Now, while I would wish this on none of you, I do see it happening to people up and down the Costa on a daily basis and most of them unfortunately have not taken the time to do a backup. Well it’s June again, and summer is here – well it should be! I’m sitting writing this outside the Hostal Galicia in La Marina in a comfortable twenty something degrees with black rain clouds overhead!I think I know why it’s about to rain – friends of ours from the UK arrived to stay with us for a week and so I have decided to blame them for the weather – it’s all their fault OK!
Last night I was thinking about the technology used in getting them from the UK over to our place in Algorfa (every time I tell customers from Gran Alacant that we live in Algorfa they say “where’s that?” – it’s about 25 mins down the coast, 10 mins inland from Guardarmar – you really should get out more). Anyway back to the technology (blame the clouds for my mood!) Read this entire article »
Many people have asked me what the Google toolbar is. Their friends have told them that they should get it but they are nervous about installing something new on to their computer, so I thought we would dedicate a few lines to looking at what it is and how it can be used.
The Google toolbar is an add-on application to your web browser; it can be installed very easily on either Internet Explorer or Firefox by simply going to the following website address – http://toolbar.google.com Read this entire article »
This month we continue to look at Amazons book reader, the Kindle. In March we looked at how you might use additional software to get the best out of the Kindle, and this month we continue in the same vein, covering some of the less well-known features of this great little device.
Something thing that many people are unaware of is that you can take screen shots with yor Kindle – a screen shot is simply a photograph of whatever you have on the screen at the time you take it. To do this just press ALT + Shift + G together, the screen will flash momentarily and a copy of the screen will be saved to your Kindle’s memory. Read this entire article »
This month we look at Amazon’s book reader, the Kindle. Many of you received one from Santa – I know because I have been asked by loads of people how you do various things with it like connecting it to WIFI, changing the default country etc. So I thought I would dedicate the next couple of months to looking at this popular device.
The Kindle, for those you that don’t know what I am going on about, is a sleek graphite looking tablet device that is dedicated to allowing you to carry around your library of books, enabling you to read pretty much whatever you like on the move. It’s certainly the easiest way to carry around 100’s of books if you like to read whilst you travel. Read this entire article »
